TO MEET A PERSON, GO AND MEET HIS WORK
TO MEET A PERSON, GO AND MEET HIS WORK Do Not
Ask Him Who He Is. Walk Through What He Has Spent His Life
Building. Can you really know a person by meeting him? Perhaps.
But there may be another way. Meet his work. Dr. Abhishek
Gilara discovered this unexpectedly after spending several hours
seeing the decades of work created by a gentleman he had hardly
met before. Later, while having lunch with the gentleman and his
son, one sentence came naturally: “If somebody really wants to
meet your father, he should go and see the work your father has
done.” That sentence became this book. Because our work carries
evidence that words often cannot.
But work does not mean the impressive office, beautiful reception, expensive infrastructure or
carefully prepared presentation. Go deeper. Meet the staff. Meet the customers. See the product.
Study the systems. Look at how mistakes are handled. See how the junior-most person is treated.
See whether quality remains when deadlines become difficult. See what happens when nobody
important is visiting. And above all: See what happens when the owner is not in the room. That is
where leadership becomes visible. That is where values either become real or remain words. And
that is where work begins revealing the worker. But this book eventually turns the mirror towards
us. Because the real question is not: “How should I judge another person’s work?” The real question
is: “What is my work revealing about me?” One day our titles will disappear. Our visiting
cards will become outdated. Our offices will belong to someone else. Our speeches will end. Our
photographs will fade. And we will no longer be available to explain who we were. Then our work
will speak. What will yours say? ⸻ “Do not spend your life preparing a great introduction. Spend
your life creating work that introduces you beautifully even in your absence.”
