REWRITING A 100-YEAR LEGACY (PART-X)
WHY FIGHT THE CROCODILES WHEN YOU CAN CREATE
A NEW OCEAN? After Rambhajo’s entered the public markets,
one media interviewer asked Dr. Abhishek Gilara a striking question:
“How will you survive among the other crocodiles in the
jewellery market?” His answer became the foundation of this
book. For more than twenty-five years, the fourth generation of
Rambhajo’s did not build its growth around defeating competitors
or capturing somebody else’s customers.
It focused on creating. Creating new designs. Creating new customers. Creating new geographies.
Creating new opportunities. Creating new relevance for centuries-old Indian craftsmanship. And
ultimately, creating a larger market in which many could prosper. In REWRITING A 100-YEAR
LEGACY: WHEN TRADITION WENT PUBLIC — PART X, Dr. Abhishek Gilara explains why
the future of Rambhajo’s after its IPO will not be built simply by opening stores where the company
already sells strongly. The greater ambition is to develop markets where demand does not yet fully
exist. To introduce new generations to Kundan, Meena, Polki and Jadau. To take Indian heritage
jewellery beyond traditional geographies. To create global appreciation for Indian craftsmanship.
And to build an ecosystem in which artisans, designers, customers, partners and future generations
can grow together. This is not a book about avoiding competition. It is about refusing to let competition
define your imagination. It is about the difference between fighting for market share and creating
market space. Between protecting an existing customer and developing a new one. Between
expanding a company and expanding an art. Between inheriting an ocean and having the courage
to create the next one. Most importantly, it is a message from the fourth generation to the fifth: Do
not inherit only what we built. Inherit the courage to build what does not yet exist. Because a
100-year legacy does not become a 200-year legacy by standing still. It becomes one by continuously
creating new reasons for the future to need it.
