“The Most Human HR Policy Is to Be Human”

by Dr. Abhishek Gilara

Great HR isn’t built on policies. It’s built on understanding.

The best human resource practices are those that begin with acknowledging one simple truth—we are all human. Behind every role is a real person, with emotions, responsibilities, and stories that go far beyond their job description.True leadership lies not in rigid rules, but in responsive compassion.

Just a few days ago, I was approached by a valued member of our managerial team, Aditi. She expressed a heartfelt request—not for a promotion or a reward, but for something even more human. She needed leave. First, a week off. Then, a request to reduce her working hours for a month. Why? Her beloved pet was about to have babies.

To some, it might seem unconventional—granting a “maternity leave” for a pet. But I didn’t hesitate. I granted it instantly.Because to Aditi, this wasn’t just a pet. It was family.

And that’s exactly what leadership is about—respecting what matters to others, even if it’s not something you personally relate to. It’s about customising roles, schedules, and support systems so that our team can thrive—not just professionally, but personally.

When employees feel seen, they become loyal. When they feel valued, they give their best. And when they feel safe being human, that’s when they truly blossom.

We often talk about employee retention, engagement, and performance. But at the heart of it all is empathy.

People don’t leave companies. They leave managers who don’t understand them.

Let us build a workplace that’s flexible, thoughtful, and deeply human.Where policies have room for heart, and where performance grows—not by pressure, but by trust.

Because the most powerful HR strategy… is care.
