The Art We Saved: When We Took Responsibility for Jadau

by Dr. Abhishek Gilara

Look at the fate of Kolhapuri chappals a craft rich in history and beauty, yet today, its makers barely earn enough to sustain a dignified life. Despite the heritage they hold in their hands, these artisans remain unrecognized, underpaid, and forgotten by the very markets they serve.

THE KOLHAPURI CHAPPALS

We could’ve let Jadau meet the same fate.

The Turning Point

When we stepped into our 104-year-old family business 25 years ago, Jadau was fading.

It was seen as outdated stuck in centuries-old designs, dismissed by modern fashion, and far from being a scalable or profitable model. The artisans behind it were surviving, not thriving. Their hands carried divinity, but their futures carried uncertainty.

And that’s when we made a decision : This is our responsibility.

From Survival to Significance

We chose not to treat Jadau as just another product. We treated it as a cultural treasure one that needed revival, reinvention, and rightful respect.

  • We modernized its design language without diluting its soul

  • We reduced production cycles without compromising authenticity

  • We created platforms where artisans weren’t just workers they were partners in pride

  • We built a brand that wore the legacy of its makers on its sleeve

Today, Jadau is no longer a fading tradition. It is a global statement of heritage and style. And most importantly the artisans no longer stand in the shadows.

They stand on stage with dignity, value, and pride.

As I wrote in “Built by Artisans, Worn by the World”:

We didn’t just build a product. We built a movement—Where heritage meets profitability, and craftsmanship meets dignity.

Let this be a reminder for every creative, every entrepreneur, and every legacy bearer: Traditions don’t die. People let them. But if you take ownership If you design with heart and lead with purpose You don’t just transform a business. You change a destiny.
