THE ART OF FINDING THE RIGHT EMPLOYEE BEGINS WITH THE RIGHT HR

by Dr Abhishek Gilara

“It’s so hard to find the right employee.”

“After months, we realise we’ve hired the wrong person.”

“Talent looks promising on paper but fails in action.”

These are the common refrains heard across boardrooms and HR departments. Despite countless interviews, detailed resumes, and structured onboarding processes, many companies still struggle with one thing: finding the right person for the job.

So here’s the question: Is there a way to consistently identify the right employee—someone whoo is hard-working, committed, and aligned with the company’s values?

Yes. But the answer doesn’t start with the employee. It starts with the HR.

Why the Right HR is the Real Gamechanger

Hiring the right employee begins by hiring the right eye—someone who doesn’t just match qualifications and filter keywords but understands:

  • Human psychology

  • Work ethic

  • Unspoken intent

  • And most importantly, character

This isn’t about algorithms or checklists. It’s about instinct, experience, and the ability to sense in a single meeting whether the person sitting across the table will be an asset—or a future liability.

A Reflection From the Window

Let me share a simple story.

Outside my dining window is a lush green belt. A few days ago, hidden beneath the thick leaves, I noticed something—two small white flowers blooming quietly in the corner. They were almost invisible. No one would have seen them. But I did—because I know what flowers look like. Even when only a faint shape and colour are visible, I can still recognise their presence.

A truly capable HR is exactly like that.

They see potential even when it’s hidden—beneath nervousness, simplicity, or inexperience. They don’t overlook the quiet ones. They don’t get dazzled by the loud ones. They don’t guess. They know.

The Hidden Cost of a Wrong Hire

Let’s not sugarcoat it—a wrong hire costs more than just time and salary. It drains energy, weakens culture, and affects team morale. Worse, it distracts leadership from strategy to firefighting.

But a right HR protects the company like a gatekeeper—letting in only those who are ready to contribute, grow, and thrive. They don’t just fill roles. They build teams.

The Heart of Every Great Company? A Visionary HR

So yes, finding the right employee is hard. But that challenge becomes manageable—when you have the right person choosing them.

If you want great people in your company, start by hiring someone who knows how to find them.

Because every flower that blooms… was once just a hidden bud beneath the leaves. And only the right eye can spot it.
